house highlight: the fireplace

house highlight: the fireplace

It’s no secret that I love wood-burning fireplaces. My parents have one and it has always been one of my favorite things about their house. So when we started looking at houses, a fireplace was on the list. Iowa gets cold in the winter–below zero, with dangerous wind chills and a long, long winter season. … Continue reading

snowy sunday

snowy sunday

I sat down to write a lovely post about our house, full of great before/after photos and all kinds of fun details. And then I realized that every last one of my house photos is on my other memory card, which is still in Nebraska. So instead of regaling you with house stories, I will … Continue reading

miraculous may

miraculous may

I woke up this morning with a huge grin on my face because this is what spring in Iowa looks like: Everyone I spoke with today lamented the weather. So cold, they said. Not very springlike, they complained. Why can’t it be warm? they whined. I ignored them. I called my dad to swap excited … Continue reading

windy

windy

It doesn’t feel very springy here, despite what the calendar says. The wind was so cold today, it took my breath away when I was walking to my car. But I’m not complaining. I love winter. I hope it stays cold for another two months. Summer is overrated.

signs of spring

We got a few inches of snow overnight, and spring seems eons away. But I’m keeping these beauties on my desk as a lovely reminder. As long as I have flowers, winter can stick around for awhile…

a winter warm-up

The high today was a balmy 43 degrees. I didn’t even wear my winter coat. Winter in Iowa is cake. I shot these guys this past weekend. They didn’t survive the day. The sunshine is nice, but I kind of miss the 10-foot snow drifts.

snow snow snow

Here are a few more photos taken in the few minutes I spent outside yesterday. It was beautiful but bitterly cold. The roads around here are still pretty dicey, so I’m glad we’re not headed anywhere for a few days. Mr. Phish and I bundled up good before we headed out to scoop the driveway. … Continue reading

draco to the rescue!

We interrupt our regularly scheduled photographs to bring you… SNOW. Yesterday, Des Moines was officially in a blizzard warning, and I’ll admit, I was skeptical. Last winter was so mild that I never actually had to use a shovel. Our ice melt sat untouched. To say it was mild would be a great understatement. So … Continue reading

extra chocolately, please

Day 29: Big At my house, we don’t mess around with cocoa in envelopes. We go straight for the mega size, because I like my cocoa really strong. One envelope is never enough. And don’t even get me started on the marshmallows. I’m excessive.
